Preserving the Greenbelt & Oak Ridges Moraine
Starts With You
Update
Good News! Greenbelt Water Keepers, the local community and regular citizens like YOU successfully opposed the Langmaid Energy Storage Project on Clarington's Greenbelt Oak Ridges Moraine. On November 10, 2023, Plus Power's representative David Biggar notified Susan Ellis of the Greenbelt Water Keepers that Plus Power will not submit the Langmaid Energy Storage Project to the Independent Electricity System Operator Long Term 1 Request for Proposal (IESO LT1 RFP).
Greenbelt Water Keepers pursued and continues to pursue the timeline for a formal announcement of Plus Power's statement, removal of the project websites (occured November 22, 2023) and confirmation that there are no future proposals planned for this site. In absence of that formal announcement to date, on November 21, 2023 GWK decided to publish the informal email from David Biggar, Plus Power, Manager of Project Development.
Greenbelt Water Keepers turns its attention now to raising awareness among other communities and environmental advocates while proposing amendments to the IESO project proposal evaluation criteria, Greenbelt Legislation and Ministry of Environment, Climate and Parks Environmental Assessment Guideline for Electricity Projects.
Thanks to all who helped us along this hard-won but satisfying journey to Keep the Greenbelt Green. Well done!
Respectfully and with gratitude,
Susan Ellis and Christine Tutunjian
Greenbelt Water Keepers, Directors
Plus Power is proposing a 200 MW battery energy storage system on environmentally sensitive land.
The Greenbelt is under constant threat by government backed development.
This proposal is in response to the Ontario Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) Long-Term 1 Request for Proposals (RFP) to which Plus Power Inc. is submitting a proposal.
In 2002 the Oak Ridges Moraine Conservation Plan was created to protect these vitally important lands and their impact on the water table for a significant portion of Southern Ontario. This lot has been chosen by Plus Power, regardless of its environmental importance to the local ecology and community and it’s inclusion in the Oak Ridges Moraine.
Environmental assessments will not occur until after the RFP has been awarded and the site has been purchased from the existing farm owner. A conditional land purchase agreement is currently in place awaiting the RFP outcome.
Our Research
We are local residents, neighbours and land caretakers concerned about the rapidly evolving and minimally communicated plans for this area.
We have been given a very short window of time to research, voice concerns and ask questions before the Plus Power RFP is submitted. These are our observations of impact on this area.
Take Action
